The calendar sets your dates, not your price
A painting company in Wisconsin has a busy season and a quiet one, and they are not close. Exterior work runs from about mid-May to early October, roughly 20 weeks, and nearly everyone wants their outside done inside that window. From November to April the crew works indoors or not at all. The quiet months are when a company has room on the calendar, which buys you better dates, not a lower price.
| When | What is going on | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| December to March | Indoors only. The quietest stretch of the year. | The best pick of dates for inside work. |
| April to mid-May | Too cold and wet for most exteriors. | Book spring and September exteriors now, before they fill. |
| Mid-May to September | Exterior season. The busiest months. | Ask early. September is the best month and goes first. |
| October and November | The season closes. | The last exteriors finish. A good time to ask about winter rooms. |
Winter is the inside's season
Houses are heated, and interior paint cures fine in winter. What changes is the calendar: with nothing to do outside, a crew has whole weeks to give to rooms, kitchens and stairwells, so you get your pick of dates. The price is the same as in any other month; the dates are what is better. Ask in October or November and you choose them before they go.
Doing more at once saves days
What a calendar cannot do, one job can: one walkthrough, one setup, one round of covering floors, and a crew that can move inside when it rains instead of losing the day. If the inside and the outside both need it, putting them on one written quote saves days and trips, even when they are painted in different seasons.
What does not get cheaper
The outside. An exterior coat has to stay above its minimum temperature through the whole cure, which in a Wisconsin November it will not do overnight. A company offering to paint your siding in late fall because its schedule is slow is offering you a coat that fails early. Book an exterior early for good dates; do not push it into the cold.
How to time it
- Ask in the fall for winter rooms, and pick your dates before they go.
- Put the outside on the same quote as the inside, even if it is painted in spring.
- Book a September exterior in March. It is the best month and fills first.
